When there is a chill in the air and the leaves begin to fall, it's time to prepare your pool for winter.
Here are some products to help take the chore out of winterization.
Air PillowsThe pillows are used to take up ice expansion in above-ground pools. Their purpose is to prevent the water from expanding and breaking the pool wall when it freezes. Thank goodness this is somewhat rare.
- Position the pillow(s) in center of the pool and tie them to the pool walls in two places. This should maintain their position during cover instillation.
- Replace the pillow(s) if they develop leaks.
- Pillows are not made to keep rainwater out of the pool, we carry cover pumps for this. You should pump (or siphon) the rainwater off the cover a few times throughout the winter.
- Also, remove leaves from cover. Excess weight and stress can cause the cover to rip and/or fall in.
- Make sure to check the pool water level once a month. Also, check the liner for leaks at the same time. Fill with a hose, if necessary, to keep as the water level as high as possible to prevent damage to cover, liner and walls.
Cover PumpsThis pump makes short work of lifting the rainwater from the top of your cover. Excess weight stress and can cause the cover to rip and/or fall in.
Freeze Protection Sensors by IntermaticThis solid-state unit can be preset to a certain water temperature. When the water reaches that temperature your filter pump (and heater, if desired) kicks on to circulate the water. All units are rated to use on motors up to three horsepower.
Leaf Nets by CantarLay this mesh net over the top of your solar blanket or winter pool cover to keep leaves and debris out of pool. No more scooping stinky, slimy leaves off of your cover. Just pull off after the leaves have fallen. Made of tough, carbonized strands that are knitted together making them nearly indestructible. Don't settle for cheaper nets, we feel this one is the best!
Water Bags / TubesThese are for in-ground pools. They are made of heavy vinyl. They have dual chambers to stabilize rolling and maintain functionality if one side gets punctured.
- Replace any that may have broken over the winter. It is a good idea to keep a few spares on hand to replace as needed.
- Fill tubes to approx 85% to allow for expansion, tightly seal. DO NOT OVERFILL TUBES! Tubes should ideally touch each other end to end, but spacing them about 1 foot apart is OK.
- If you find tubes that are leaking replace them with new tubes. It is not a good idea to patch them unless you absolutely have to. Tubes help hold the cover on the pool and can also prevent the wind from blowing the cover up. Areas not properly covered with tubes are subject to these mishaps.
- Do not use furniture, flower pots, or your spouses favorite statuary in place of tubes. They may end up in the pool if the cover starts to slide and cause damage to liner and cover.
- Pump excess rain water off the cover a couple times diring the winter season. We carry a cover pump to make this a simple task.
- Remove leaf accumulation (excess weight and stress can cause the cover to rip and/or fall in).
- Check the water level (maintain the proper level to prevent damage to cover).
